Thomas Dambo Is Bringing a New Giant Troll to Wisconsin

The artist, who unveiled the Mama Rosa troll in Wauwatosa in 2025, will be bringing his new piece to Mt. Pleasant.

A globally recognized name in public art is headed to Racine County. Danish artist Thomas Dambo will bring one of his signature larger-than-life troll sculptures to the Village of Mount Pleasant, with installation planned for the second half of 2027.

The project follows the success of Dambo’s first Wisconsin installation, Mama Rosa, located in Wauwatosa. Unveiled in May 2025, the sculpture attracted more than 62,000 visitors within its first month and generated an estimated $4 million in economic impact; an outcome Mount Pleasant leaders hope to replicate.

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

Known for crafting massive wooden trolls from recycled materials, Dambo’s work has become an international phenomenon. His sculptures can be found in more than 20 countries and collectively draw over 4 million visitors each year. Village officials say the addition of a troll in Mount Pleasant is expected to elevate the community’s tourism profile while offering a unique, nature-focused attraction.

“This troll will welcome thousands of people to visit and experience Mount Pleasant,” said Village President David DeGroot. “Those visitors will support our local businesses, explore our parks, and discover everything that makes this community special.”

Funding for the project will come from the village’s longstanding hotel room tax, which has supported tourism initiatives for more than three decades. The Mount Pleasant Tourism Commission has approved the use of these funds to bring the troll to life.

While a specific location has not yet been finalized, several parks and public spaces are under consideration. Dambo and his team are expected to visit Mount Pleasant later this year to evaluate potential sites.

Dambo is known for using reclaimed wood and other recycled materials, encouraging environmental awareness through art. Local officials are inviting residents and businesses across Racine County to contribute materials and volunteer during the construction process in 2027.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that people won’t want to miss,” said Matt Prochaska, Mount Pleasant Tourism Manager. “Having a troll in Mount Pleasant, of course, will make our community a stronger tourism destination, but the pride our community will take in working on it is the strongest of all.”

Organizers say additional details, including volunteer opportunities and guidelines for donating materials, will be released in the coming months. Residents interested in participating can reach out via email at TrollHelpers@mtpleasantwi.gov.

As anticipation builds, the project represents more than just a new attraction – it signals a blend of art, sustainability, and community pride that officials believe will leave a lasting mark on Mount Pleasant.
