Drive to central Wisconsin and you will find yourself feasting on a color buffet called the Cranberry Highway, traversing some 50 miles from Wisconsin Rapids to Warrens. More than half of the world’s supply of cranberries is grown in Wisconsin, generating $1 billion in state economic impact, according to the Wisconsin State Cranberry Growers Association. The tart fruit is cultivated in bogs that are traditionally flooded with water during harvest season (starting in late September).
Now’s the time to experience this scene-stealing part of the state, capped off by the premier celebration: Warrens Cranberry Festival, Sept. 22-24. In its 50th year, Cranfest offers a cornucopia of fun, from berry-themed foods to marsh tours.
