This Bites: Mother’s Day, Vegan Dinners and Batches Bakery’s Transition

The culinary podcast featuring 88Nine’s Tarik Moody and MilMag’s Ann Christenson talking about all things dining-related.

This Bites (on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee) is taking on Mother’s Day weekend with a three-brunch punch. That’s three local places to take your mom for a great brunch on Sunday, May 12. They include the three-course affair at Crazy Water in Walker’s Point, the buffet at the Iron Horse Hotel (500 W. Florida St.), also in Walker’s Point, and I.d. at the Delafield Hotel. Of course, there are loads of other places and since this is a big dining holiday, I’d recommend jumping on that reservation pronto.

The Mother’s Day brunch at the Iron Horse features desserts by the Third Ward’s Batches Bakery (401 E. Erie St.), which closed its storefront on May 10 but will continue to make all the pastries and desserts for its brother-restaurants DanDan, EsterEv and Fauntleroy, and the Iron Horse Hotel, for which JVR hospitality group (formed by the DanDan owners) is now consulting

In the world of local plant-based dining, we have a few vegan dinners to share with you – one is at Balzac Wine Bar on May 14; the other is at Lazy Susan on May 16.  There’s a new vegan pop-up food truck in town, called Maya Ophelia’s. The owners do plant-based versions of Mexican, Puerto Rican and Filipino dishes in pop-up locations like the Bay View bar Lost Whale and at Walker’s Point’s Boone & Crockett (taking over the Taco Moto truck). Learn more about what they make and where you might find Maya Ophelia’s.

Ann Christenson has covered dining for Milwaukee Magazine since 1997. She was raised on a diet of casseroles that started with a pound of ground beef and a can of Campbell's soup. Feel free to share any casserole recipes with her.
