Get to know Sonny Knight & The Lakers, the June 9 performer during Jazz in the Park’s 25th anniversary year.
East Town’s Jazz in the Park celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2016 and Milwaukee Magazine is partnering with the iconic Downtown Milwaukee event for all sorts of giveaways and other goodies throughout the summer!
The headlining act for June 9 is Sonny Knight & The Lakers. Sonny Knight has a great story. He’s a 68-year-old retired truck driver from Minneapolis who joined up with a band of 20- and 30-something musicians for a group that has now released two full length albums. The first is a a studio album called I’m Still Here, and the second is live double album called Sonny Knight And The Lakers Do It Live. Both were released via Minneapolis-based Secret Stash Records, and you can stream both albums here.
According to Sonny Knight & The Lakers’ website, “After releasing Do It Live in June of 2015, they toured hard throughout the proceeding summer and fall. Since then they’ve cut a new studio album (due Sept 2016), collaborated with James Brown alumni Fred Wesley and Jab’o Starks, produced their own live soul revue for Minnesota Public Radio at The Fitzgerald Theater (home of A Prairie Home Companion), and starred in an hour long LIVE TV special for Minnesota’s PBS affiliate station.”
