The Touching Story Behind This Beautiful Snowscape

The Touching Story Behind This Beautiful Snowscape

A hobby photographer reflects on the picture her late husband made on a crisp winter day.

Mike and Marshia Crowley had been avid hobby photographers for years before launching the Life in the Northwoods website and Facebook page in 2012 to share their perspectives of the beauty of the region. “I loved it for the fun of it and something to do together, while Mike got more serious and technical,” Marshia says.

After Mike died in 2022 at age 76, Marshia has continued posting wildlife and scenic photography to Life in the Northwoods. “It has been a huge help in healing for me, and gives me a purpose, too,” she says. This shot of the Manitowish River near their home in Boulder Junction, captured by Mike after a winter storm one March, brings back fond memories.

“I loved our little adventures of going out to take photos together. We never had to go far,” Marshia says. “The contrast of the sparkling white snow against that blue sky, along with the scent in the air that morning, was breathtaking – something I’ll always remember.”
