Menomonee Falls-based retailer Kohl’s officially opened its store on Friday in the former Downtown Boston Store location.
The 35,000-square-foot space is part of Kohl’s effort to create smaller format stores in various markets that feature localized product assortments. The smaller size space like that offered by the Downtown store allows Kohl’s to enter previously untapped markets and new neighborhoods that are unable to support a full-size store.

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!
Kohl’s recently completed renovations of the Westown space at the corner of West Wisconsin Avenue and North Vel R. Phillips Avenue that had been empty since Boston Store vacated the property in 2018 after operating there for nearly 125 years. Kohl’s unveiled plans in July 2022 to renovate and move into the Downtown space located at the site formerly known as the Grand Avenue Mall and later the Shops of Grand Avenue.
The new store, which is connected to Downtown’s Third Street Market Hall food court, features large display windows and an open shopping concept.

In addition to a full-sized, 2,500 square foot Sephora at the front of the store, Kohl’s Downtown store also has a curated selection of apparel, home items from bedding to small kitchen appliances and a localized assortment of Milwaukee products from brands including MKE Home and Home by Homefield, as well as team apparel from many of Wisconsin’s sports teams.
The opening of Kohl’s Milwaukee location is one of five new stores the retailer is opening across the country this fall, including stores in Katy, Texas; Forney, Texas; Garden City, Kansas; and Madison, Indiana.
