The Jazz Estate Will Close in June

The staple East Side club has been a haven for live jazz since 1977.

This June, The Jazz Estate will play its last tune. The intimate East Side institution, a home for live jazz since 1977, has announced it will close after Saturday, June 27.

Before then, the club will be continue to be open with shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, leading up to the final gig on June 27 with Chicago band Twin Talk. A “grand farewell party” on Sunday, June 28, is in the works, according to a Facebook post announcing the closure.

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

“We love this place,” said owner John Dye in the announcement. “We’ve worked incredibly hard on it, the restoration, the details, every corner of that room. None of it happened by accident. And none of it would have meant anything without the musicians who brought it to life, the staff who showed up night after night and gave everything they had, and the customers who made it their place.”

Dye cited changing nightlife habits post-COVID and rising operating costs as reasons for the closure. “Many of our costs have more than doubled,” he said. “We’ve worked hard to adapt, to pivot, to find a new rhythm. … But the math has caught up with us, and I’ve known in my heart that the time was coming.” He added that The Estate’s staff has been offered positions at Dye’s other bars.

Also the owner of Bryant’s, At Random and Von Trier, Dye took over The Jazz Estate in 2015 and reopened it a year later after restoring the building. The pandemic closed the venue from 2020 until 2022. The following year, it rebranded as The Estate with a stronger focus on cocktails and less on music. It ended regular operating hours in 2024 before reinstating them in early 2025.

“Letting go of The Jazz Estate feels like it runs against everything I stand for,” Dye said. “But I’ve come to believe that the most honest way I can honor that mission with The Estate is to find the right next person to carry it forward. … If that person is you, or if you know who they might be, please reach out to us at estate@historiccocktails.com.”

Dozens of patrons left comments responding to news hours after it was posted. “Nooo! This is very sad news. The Jazz Estate is a Milwaukee gem. Thanks for keeping it open for so many years,” said one commenter. “As someone who grew up on Murray Ave. and grew up on Jazz, this place has been a beacon forever. I definitely appreciate the love that went into it, it was evident in all of the details,” said another.

The calendar of final shows at The Estate can be found on its website.
