The Best Things to Do This Week, According to Our Editors: Sept. 2

Cheer on the Packers, sip beer on a patio at Third Space Brewing, and more.

1. Get Ready for Some Football

CHRIS DROSNER, EXECUTIVE EDITOR

MICAH PARSONS! Is the game-wrecking edge rusher cast off from the Cowboys the final piece of a Packers championship puzzle? Or is he the now-overpaid, locker-room-wrecking head case that Vikings and Bears fans have been telling you he is since minutes after Green Bay traded for him last week? Let’s find out. The Packers open the season against the division-winning Detroit Lions and dangerously immobile quarterback Jared Goff in the Sunday late slot, 3:25 p.m., at Lambeau Field. Let’s go!

2. Cling Desperately to Patios While You Still Can at Third Space

ARCHER PARQUETTE, MANAGING EDITOR

The temperatures may be dropping, the sun may be setting earlier every day, but I refuse to go gentle into that good night. In fact, you might say that I rage, rage against the dying of the light. … By which I mean, I sip beer on patios. The time we still have left to enjoy the warm outdoors is short before autumn’s cold and then winter’s brutal freeze arrives. In fact, recent days have already verged on hoodie weather. So, for the next week (maybe two if we’re lucky), I suggest you take advantage of patios while you still can. One of my favorite is Third Space Brewing in the Menomonee Valley: spacious, friendly and with a nice lineup of beer on tap.

3. Cook Up Lemon-Pepper Zucchini Pasta

ANN CHRISTENSON, DINING EDITOR

Give me all the zucchini! I am loving it this season. And I’m on the lookout for things to do with it. This pasta uses one large zucchini squash (it feeds four, but I say two – or one, with lots left over) and has a secret weapon – white miso. The mild fermented soybean paste has a mellow, beany flavor and a hint of sweetness. And it is salty, so I would not salt the pasta water. I would also be very conservative with the cheese because pecorino is very salty. In fact, there’s an error in the recipe: 4 ounces of pecorino cheese is more like 1 cup (not 3 ¼ cups!). I think 3/4 cup is plenty. I’m also really loving dill right now, so I’m pretty liberal with it here!

4. Marvel at Nature at a Swift Night Out

EVAN MUSIL, ARTS & CULTURE EDITOR

As we all know, it’s Swift Season. Yes, of course I’m talking about chimney swifts – those high-soaring, V-shaped birds you might notice gliding above you if you stare deep into the sky. They get their name from where they often nest; at night, flocks of swifts dazzlingly swirl and dive into abandoned chimneys to roost. My partner introduced me to this phenomenon, and it’s quite a sight. You have a few chances to catch it this week: Calvary Cemetery on Sept. 4 and Madison on Sept. 6 – location to be determined by the birds.

5. Roll Out to the Milwaukee Polka Riot

Only in Wisconsin will you hear polka crossed with hip-hop, punk and The Beatles. Milwaukee Polka Riot is a no-holds-barred fest with bands like the high-speed Polkaholics playing “alternative” takes on the traditional music. This year, it’s rolling out the barrel at Linneman’s Riverwest Inn on Sept. 6.
