The Best Things to Do This Week, According to Our Editors: Oct. 14

Thursday nights at MAM, Salad from Goodland Greens, Wild Space Dance Co.’s next show and more make the list.

1. Watch Wild Space Dance Company’s InSite: Cycles

EVAN MUSIL, ARTS AND CULTURE EDITOR

It feels like I’ve been saying this for a while, but this time it truly looks like this is the last warm weekend until spring. Why not spend it watching an outdoor dance performance? Wild Space, Milwaukee’s troubadours of dance, is opening its season at Davidson Park this Friday and Saturday. When reporting a story about the show, I scoped out the new park with artistic director Dan Schuchart. I visited on a cloudy summer morning, but I could envision the theatrical lighting awakening the space at night, and the autumn trees coloring the sightline from the bottom of the amphitheater. At that time, the group had only just started conceptualizing what the performance might look like. Now that it’s almost here, I’m excited to see what they’ve come up with.

2. Spend Thursday Night at the Milwaukee Art Museum

ARCHER PARQUETTE, MANAGING EDITOR

Last Thursday, I was out and about, moving and shaking, influencing and innovating, weeping and wailing, shining and thriving, as I’m known to do, and I had the opportunity to spend pretty much the whole afternoon at the Milwaukee Art Museum. I toured the galleries, heard a talk in the auditorium, and of course, took in the beauty of Windhover Hall. The day reminded me what a gem we have on our lakefront and sparked a determination within me to take more advantage of it. That determination starts this Thursday with MAM’s ongoing Thursday Nights at MAM series, which opens the space up at a “pay-what-you-will” admission from 4-8 p.m. From 5-7, there’s live music and a pop-up bar. It’s an exciting, affordable opportunity to appreciate the breathtaking building.

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

3. Get a Salad From Goodland Greens

ANN CHRISTENSON, DINING EDITOR

Am I the only person who goes to 3rd Street Market Hall (275b W. Wisconsin Ave.) and orders a… salad? Well, I wasn’t the only person in line at Goodland Greens (which replaced the Greenhouse, another salad place) but the vendor also wasn’t hopping, either. In my ongoing quest to find a satisfying healthy-ish lunch, I ordered Goodland’s power chicken bowl, which was good although different from the description on the menu. Instead of red quinoa and orzo, the grain used here was Israeli couscous. Not a deal-breaker for me. It also had chickpeas, warm grilled chicken, carrot, red pepper and avocado over a bed of kale, napa cabbage and sliced brussel sprouts. The thick lemon tahini dressing brought it home.

4. View Lots of Art at Gallery Night MKE

EVAN MUSIL, ARTS & CULTURE EDITOR

For the most part, the doors of Milwaukee’s art galleries are always open, but it can be intimidating for the average person to walk in for a gander. Gallery Night & Day MKE is meant to take down these perceived barriers by inviting everyone for a good ol’ gallery crawl. As most places open new exhibitions around this time, it’s often the best (and quickest) way to see a good chunk of Milwaukee’s arts scene. It’s on Friday night and Saturday afternoon this go around. On my docket are the fiber works of Portrait Society’s “Criss Cross,” the new Fred Stonehouse works at Tory Folliard, and MIAD’s reflective exhibitions featuring alumni and faculty – but really, I’m hoping to pop into as many spots as I can.

5. Read The Most Famous Girl in the World by Iman Hariri-Kia

BRIANNA SCHUBERT, ASSOCIATE DIGITAL EDITOR

Last night I finished this fantastic whirlwind of a book, and I need someone to talk about it with. It’s a novel about Rose, a journalist who writes an exposé about a social grifter (an Anna Delvey type) named Poppy Hastings, who ends up becoming the most famous girl in the world, thanks to the story Rose writes. When Poppy gets released from Prison, Rose notices all of her sources for the story are being killed off one by one. Coincidence? She thinks not. Rose is trying to prove Poppy is a criminal, not a celebrity, and, well, chaos ensues. There were so many twists and moments where I literally gasped (and laughed) out loud. I couldn’t put it down. And the ending was insane. So anyway, can you read it and let me know your thoughts? If you do, email me. I literally need to talk about that ending!
