Editor’s Picks: Week of March 25 | Milwaukee Magazine

The Best Things to Do This Week, According to Our Editors: March 25

Get pad see ew at Thai-Namite, enjoy a drink at The Sugar Maple and more this week.

1. Drink an Espresso Martini Way Too Late in the Day and Then Wonder Why You Did That at Central Standard

ARCHER PARQUETTE, MANAGING EDITOR

Recently, I haven’t been sleeping great, so being a genius, I downed some espresso martinis last week at Central Standard’s Downtown crafthouse. Do I regret that decision? Yes. But just because you regret something doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing – just ask my ex. Or don’t. Anyway, I really enjoyed my evening at the local distillers’ bar despite its effect on my sleep schedule – nice drinks, a pleasant atmosphere, delicious cheese curds, etc. I’m planning a return visit in the summer when the rooftop opens. I’m told it’s got a fantastic view.

2. Get a Drink and Enjoy Good Conversation at The Sugar Maple

BRIANNA SCHUBERT, ASSOCIATE DIGITAL EDITOR

On Saturday night, my partner and I went to The Sugar Maple (441 E. Lincoln Ave.) for drinks. The place is such a vibe – we found it to be the perfect spot for deep, engaged conversation and a good time. The bar hosts a lot of pop-ups throughout the year, so now my new mission is to make it to the next one. They haven’t announced any yet, but I’ll be keeping my eye on their Instagram for updates.

3. Eat Pad See Ew at Thai-Namite

EVAN MUSIL, ARTS & CULTURE EDITOR

This weekend, my partner and I welcomed some college friends from out of town and gave them a wandering tour of this wonderful city. (Not to our surprise, they were impressed.) We capped off the night with dinner at this Brady Street staple at the recommendation of others. I had the pad see ew with chicken and crushed peanuts. These scrumptious noodles were a panacea after strolling arduously in the cold wind all day. We will return.

4. Swallow Your Sadness (And Also Coffee) at Ma Fischer’s

ARCHER PARQUETTE, MANAGING EDITOR

This week, I had a morning meeting on the East Side. My schedule forced me there earlier than expected, so with time to kill, I decided that it was diner time. I’ve never been to local staple Ma Fischer’s before, which is awful because it turns out it’s just my kind of place – black coffee in big mugs, no-nonsense eggs and toast, and small booths where you can sit alone without feeling like a weirdo. I had a skillet and a genuinely unhealthy amount of coffee. A waiter asked the guy sitting in front of me (also eating alone) how he was doing, and he sighed and said, “The coffee’s not working anymore,” and I think we might be kindred spirits. Anyway, that place rocks.

5. See Charlie Berens at The Riverside

Charlie Berens, Wisconsin’s de facto comedic diplomat, returns to The Riverside Theater for four shows from March 29-30. Known for his affable, folksy humor exemplifying all things Wisconsin, Berens has garnered millions of views and routinely sells out shows around the Badger State and beyond.
