Bronze and Beautiful, Baby

After years of trying self-tanners, I gave up. Whether it was cheap or expensive, it never quite looked right. The pharmacy brands were always orange, and don’t even get me started on the scent. On the opposite end, I paid a pretty penny to be professionally tanned and contoured, and the required six-hour waiting period before taking a shower was brutal. I was covered in little dots, and the smell was like I had tried covering up a heavy workout with cheap body spray. The color was still fake. So I embraced my very white skin and figured you can’t…

New Year New Fashionista

We’ve all heard the saying, “you have to lose yourself to find yourself.” I never understood what that really meant, because in my early twenties I thought I knew exactly what I wanted and where I was going: the world of beauty and fashion. That world took over most of my thoughts and I spent nearly all of my time devoted to it. As a salon hairstylist at Carenza, in Brookfield, I had such pride when my clients came to me in search of new trends. I gave them my tips, we shared secrets, and they made my life full.…

Fashion Plus Design

Every year, Callen Construction partners with Common Ground Ministry/Elena’s House to produce a fashion show fundraiser.  Tickets are $40 and all proceeds go to support Elena’s House. Read more about it here. This year‘s event will be held tonight., Aug. 20, beginning at 5:30 pm.  In addition to the live band, appetizers, cocktails and a silent auction, there’s also the fashion show which will be hosted this year by Bjorn Nasett, Milwaukee’s own Fashion Farm Boy.  My favorite part about this show is that they pair home design pieces with fashion, literally having the models walk down the runway with granite samples and sinks. This year,…

Milwaukee’s First Blogger Bazaar

Last year I was backstage at a fashion show trying to secure a giant hat to a model, when I felt a slight tap on my shoulder. I turned around to find a well-dressed young lady beaming at me. Her name was Livia Börger, a budding blogger and fashionista. Originally from Germany, Livia moved here as an au pair, and in her free time started writing a fashion blog. Inspired by similar events in other fashion capitals, Livia decided to put together the Milwaukee Blogger Bazaar. The event will be held Saturday, June 14 at Evolution Gastro Pong (formerly Spin),…

Roots Salon’s 2012 Fashion Affair

Photography by Abe Van Dyke.   “There were over 70 models this year,” exclaimed James Arztjek, a stylist at Roots Salon. “We had eight lead hair designers that organized getting all these models ready. You would think it would have been madness, but this year was the smoothest the show has ever gone.” James, the lead stylist in charge of production, had his hands in every part of the show, whether it was meeting with the DJ’s for music, to cueing everyone back stage to ensure “Roots Fashion Affair” would go on without a hitch. As this was the third…
