Apple Hits the Target

Apple to launch “mini” stores at Target For all the Mac-lovers out there, you may soon be able to purchase an Apple computer at local Target stores. According to AppleInsider, Apple will open 25 “mini” stores within Target locations across the nation as part of a new agreement. However, the Target/Apple partnership is not new – as early as 2002 Target was carrying the iPod within its stores. And in 2010, the iPad and iPhone were added to the growing list of Apple products available. Apple says this will be a “small start” as there are almost 1,800 Target stores…

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Christmas is finally here and that means only one thing: I’ll be out of the office for a few days Santa is coming! So in lieu of my normal Monday post, I’d like to bring you some merry, Santa-related joy before this holiday weekend: the Santa Tracker! Every holiday season Google partners with the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) for NORAD Tracks Santa. Beginning at 1 a.m. (CST) on December 24, children worldwide can begin following Santa’s progress around the globe. And word on the street is that the boys and girls of Milwaukee have been good this year,…

Store Spotlight- American Science & Surplus

Address: 6901 W. Oklahoma Ave. Additional locations: Chicago and Geneva, Ill. Hours: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily With a name like American Science & Surplus and a mascot named Jarvis, I thought I had a pretty good idea of what to expect before stopping by the Oklahoma Avenue store. But even I, inner nerd and all, was shocked by the sheer number of unique items. Founded by Al Luebbers “around 1937,” the store has come a long way since its inception in Chicago. Originally called “American Lens & Photo,” Luebbers and his wife were selling reject lenses from the…

They’ve Got the Spirit!

Things have really started to get festive here at the Milwaukee Magazine office. In addition to holiday decorations and general merriment, we’ve also been feeling pretty generous. We even did a Style piece on “Gifts That Give Back” in our December issue. And it seems we’re not the only ones getting in the holiday spirit… As reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, an anonymous benefactor gave 500 students from the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District a holiday shopping trip. The children were given up to $50 each to spend at Target on gifts for themselves or for others. The benefactor,…

Store Spotlight- Broadway Paper

Broadway St., Milwaukee, Wis.  Store Hours: Mon – Fri: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sat: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sun: 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.  ‘Tis the season for holiday greeting cards and fancy wrappings. If you’re like me, newspaper and brown bags will suffice as wrapping paper. And as more of a “send when I receive” holiday card giver, I usually don’t mail out a ton of greeting cards – simply because I move too much for friends to keep tabs on me. But for those few who manage to…

The Original “Bargain Basement” Goes Under

Filene’s Basement to close: Are T.J.Maxx and Marshall’s next? I hope not… To all the bargain hunters out there: It might be time to take a trip to your local Marshall’s or T.J.Maxx. The discount retail market lost an industry pioneer last week when Syms Corp and its subsidiary Filene’s Basement filed for bankruptcy and announced the closing of all Filene’s Basement locations by January 2012. “We have been faced with increased competition from large department stores that now offer the same brands as our stores at similar discounts,” says Syms Corp CEO Marcy Syms in a prepared statement. Indeed,…
