It was the mid-1930s and he lived with his family in Warsaw, where his father served as U.S. ambassador to Poland. A restless and inquisitive practical joker, the boy pilfered his father’s silver cigarette box one day and carefully replaced a single cigarette’s tobacco with a combustible blend of tissue paper and glue.
