Streetwear Enthusiast Vato Vergara Shares His Style Tips

The local creative director gets in the groove by mixing styles in his looks.

Vato Vergara believes confidence is key to creating a look that stands out. As the creative director of CopyWrite Magazine, appearance is important to him, and he dresses up for every occasion. His style takes classic looks and incorporates streetwear and accessories to make them stand out. “Don’t conform to what society tells you to do, because that’s what I did,” he says. “I was taught that a man should dress in certain ways. Then I was like, ‘I’m going to dress how I feel.’ People see that confidence in me, and they want to learn how to do that themselves.”

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

A Shoe-In

Originally, Vergara planned to pair brown boots with this retro fit, but he likes to incorporate streetwear, so he subbed in Jordans instead. When building a look, he starts with the basics, then adds in something unexpected.

Where’s It From?

“I like when men compliment my style and it’s a women’s item,” he says. This black-and-white jacket is a score from AKIRA women’s boutique. Vergara says you just have to shop and find what’s good, regardless of gender.

Bejeweled

Vergara is wearing silver jewelry more these days because he likes to stand out against the gold trend. Plus, he says silver pairs well with the blue, black and white of this outfit.

Lost in Time

Aesthetically, Vergara says he’s stuck in the 1970s. “I didn’t want it to be very authentic ’70s; I wanted it to still be fun and modern,” he says. These blue Urban Outfitters pants capture that balance well.
