The guys behind Good City Brewing (2108 N. Farwell Ave.) hosted a media preview on Wednesday afternoon to show the space off and hand out a few samples. If this place is a preview of how the summer brewery explosion in Milwaukee is going to unfold, then we all should be very excited.
Good City has the obligatory brewery earmarks—a catchy slogan (“Seek the Good”), a cool logo, merch for sale, an engaging brand video—but it also boasts a perfectly laid-out space and, of course, well-crafted beer.
The initial tap list includes four tasty brews. Motto Mosaic Pale Ale has a huge citrus aroma and more resinous hops flavor than most brews I’ve tried made with Mosaic hops. Clean Cut Session IPA has limited bitterness and a crisp finish. Risk IPA was another solid effort where the bitterness was tempered at the finish (“clean” is a word that defines the finish of these brews). Detail Porter was flavorful but not overbearing and surprisingly easy to drink despite a fair amount of coffee and chocolate flavor.
Expect Reward IIPA, Thinking Cap Russian Imperial Stout and a few other styles to hit the tap lines in the coming weeks.
Now, about the space. The former Crank Daddy’s bike shop was tailor made to be a taproom. High ceilings and an open feel are both perfect to fit large fermentation tanks and create an inviting atmosphere. Cream City brick and a smattering of wooden tables add to the appeal.
So far so good for Good City. The brewery opens for regular business on Friday at 11:30 a.m. Go check it out, and let Milwaukee’s 2016 brewery avalanche begin.
A Rarities Sale at Discount Liquor
Discount Liquor is putting together a pretty amazing weekend sale. The Allocation Celebration takes place Saturday at 9 a.m.
Here’s how it works. Patrons can choose one beer from three different lists of rarities at Discount Liquor Milwaukee (5031 W. Oklahoma Ave.) or from two lists of rarities at Discount Waukesha (919 N. Barstow Ave.). Also, both stores are holding a raffle, and the lucky winner gets a chance to buy a bottle of Goose Island Bourbon County Rare.
The lists are loaded with great limited brews that include Perennial Sump, Three Floyds Permanent Funeral, Central Waters Rye Barrel Chocolate Porter, Founder KBS, Surly Barrel-Aged Darnkess and way too many other great beers to mention. Check out the full list on the Discount Liquor website. The sale starts at 9 a.m., but I recommend getting there earlier than that to get a spot in line.
