Roundup: Group of the Altos, Christopher Paul Stelling and more

Group of the Altos will set sail Friday on the Milwaukee Boat Line Summer Concert Series. Plus: a not-so-chill Chill on the Hill, a rap showcase at Mad Planet, and much more.

Monday, August 17: Math the Band with Morrigan, Awkward Terrible, C.J. Boyd and Run on Sunshine at Borg Ward, 7 p.m. ($7)

Math the band is Energetic synthesizer-heavy pop punk from Rhode Island, which has been known to puke on hecklers at live shows. So don’t get on their bad side. (823 W. National Ave.)

Tuesday, August 18: Chill on the Hill featuring Chief with The Size 5’s and The Hullmen at Humboldt Park, 6 p.m. (FREE)

Metal night comes to Humboldt Park this Tuesday evening for a not-so-chill Chill on the Hill. Come for power trio Chief, The Size 5’s and pysch rockers The Hullmen; stay to see children headbang. (3000 S. Howell Ave., http://www.bayviewneighborhood.org/chill_on_the_hill)

Also: WMSE’s Local/Live presents WC Tank (album release) at Club Garibaldi, 5:30 p.m. (FREE) – (2501 S. Superior St., ClubGaribaldis.com)

Wednesday, August 19: River Rhythms featuring Brother at Pere Marquette Park, 6:30 p.m. (FREE)

For those who missed out on Irish Fest this weekend, celtic music comes to Pere Marquette Park on Wednesday for the weekly River Rhythms series. The Australian-based Brother mixes the classic Irish sounds with a down-under flair (i.e. digeridoo). As evidenced by its two TV credits (ER and UPN’s The Twilight Zone) the band has been around the block a few times. (900 N. Plankinton Ave.,Westown.org/neighborhood-events/river-rhythms)

Thursday, August 20: Busdriver with milo, Lorde Fredd33 and *hitmayng at Mad Planet, 9 p.m. ($8 advance; $10 door)

Thursday night showcases two rappers from the Los Angeles-based record label Hellfyre Club, 15-year veteran Busdriver and burgeoning hometown export milo, alongside some of the local rap scene’s finest artists, Lorde Fredd33 and *hitmayng. (533 E. Center St, Mad-Planet.net)

Music Notes Show of the Week

Friday, August 21: Milwaukee Boat Line Summer Concert Series featuring Group of the Altos on the Vista King, 8:30 p.m. ($20)

Gorgeous cityscapes and lush art-rock? Who could say no to a warm boat cruise on Lake Michigan that features the 16-member ensemble Group of the Altos? There’s perhaps no better setting to listen to the band’s unhinged experimental post-rock than a calm yet unforgiving sea. (101 W. Michigan St., MKEBoat.com/concerts)

Also: Surgeons in Heat with Scallops Hotel at Circle A Cafe, 8 p.m. ($3) – (932 E. Chambers St., Circle-A-Café.org)

And: Gin Blossoms with Sam Llanas at Milwaukee County Zoo, 7 p.m. ($14.25) – (10001 W. Bluemound Rd., milwaukeezoo.org/events/alacarte)

Saturday, August 22: Christopher Paul Stelling with Hello Death at Club Garibaldi, 8 p.m.

Fans of The Tallest Man on Earth will embrace Christopher Paul Stelling’s nimble guitar work and soothing voice, but the Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter remains in his own category. His songs’ traveling spirit comes from the nomadic lifestyle of his early 20s, when he moved from Florida to Colorado then Boston then Seattle then North Carolina and then finally New York City. (2501 S. Superior St., ClubGaribaldis.com)

Also: Hot Coffin with War Brides, Them Teeth and Volunteer at Cactus Club, 9:30 p.m. – (2496 S. Wentworth Ave., CactusClubMilwaukee.com)

Sunday, August 23: Rasputina with Eliza Rickman at Shank Hall, 8 p.m. ($20) – (1434 N. Farwell Ave., ShankHall.com)

He’s in desperate need to find more physical (and hard drive) space for the exceptional albums Milwaukee musicians keep churning out.
