The Daily Bird, a popular Riverwest coffee house, has shut down, perhaps just temporarily, as of Monday.
“We have made the difficult decision to close our doors,” states a social media post by the operators of the East Center Street establishment.
“While we hope to reopen as soon as possible, we’re unsure of when that will be,” the post continues. “Your support has always meant the world to us, and we can’t thank you enough for being such an integral part of our journey.”

The Daily Bird got its start in April 2021 as a pop-up coffee shop at neighboring Cafe Centro. Later that year, it permanently took over the space at 818 E. Center Street that formerly housed the original location of Fuel Café, which closed that site during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The social media post closes with the message: “We can’t wait to serve you again soon.”
The Daily Bird’s menu consisted of a wide range of coffee and espresso drinks, along with tea and hot chocolate. A variety of food items were also available, including some vegetarian and vegan options.
Responses to the post were many. “Noooo!!! I don’t want to live in a city where The Daily Bird can’t exist. What can we do???” Andy Nelson, founder of The Glowland PR agency, said in a comment on the post.
“That place quickly became my favorite coffee shop in the city,” Nelson said. “There’s something special about the community they’ve helped build and the space they’ve created that makes so many people feel safe and welcome. I’m really hoping they’re able to come back in some shape or form.”
On Monday, another post by The Daily Bird on social media contained a series of messages similar to those it has posted over its time in operation: “Stay hydrated,” “Find Ways to Keep that Heart Swole,” and “Be Nice to Yourself.”
The Daily Bird owner Dan Zwart couldn’t be reached for comment.
