6 Ways to Spend a Rainy Day in Lake Geneva

When rainy weather keeps you indoors, Lake Geneva’s eclectic downtown offers rays of light.

Lake Geneva is synonymous with vacation homes and warm-weather activities on the water, but that doesn’t mean the resort town shuts down during the bleak months leading up to summer. Our one-day getaway itinerary is truly wet-weatherproof.

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

1. Simple Cafe, Bakery and Market

525 BROAD ST. | (262) 248-3556

The cozy, brightly colored spot for breakfast and lunch fills its menu with ingredients from around southeastern Wisconsin. Be sure to try the mushroom omelet, with shallots, Gruyère cheese and three kinds of mushrooms. Linger over a coffee and hearty meal, then pop over to the bakery next door for something sweet and comforting like a fresh-baked cinnamon roll.

2. Lake Geneva Public Library

918 W. MAIN ST. |  (262) 249-5299

On the shore of Geneva Lake, the beautiful library designed by Frank Lloyd Wright protege James R. Dresser has floor to ceiling windows along the lakeside for picture perfect views, rain or shine. The architecture is enough to capture your attention, but you can also find plenty of books new and old to read while you cozy up in one of the many seating areas.

3. Shop Along Main Street

MULTIPLE LOCATIONS

Settle in with a mimosa and make your own uniquely scented candle at The Candle Mercantile (870 W. Main St.). While you wait for your creation to set, wander over to the 10-shop Market of Lake Geneva (830 W. Main St.). Two vendors you’ll want to check out are Queen Bee Artisan Market, where you’ll find artisan-made soaps, jewelry, honey and more, and Salt & Kai for accessories and home decor with a beach vibe.

4. Geneva Lake Museum

255 MILL ST. | (262) 248-6060

Walk the brick-paved path lined with recreations of historic area businesses and houses. Find scenes like an 1800s schoolhouse and a 1920s dental workstation, along with full-size cars and miniature trains. You don’t have to be a history buff to get wrapped up in this nostalgic time travel. Tickets range from $5-$12.

5. Sopra

724 W. MAIN ST. | (262) 249-0800

Cozy and intimate, the bistro serves seasonal Italian American cuisine with a global focus. That could mean frog legs with roasted red peppers and feta or mussels in saffron cream sauce over pappardelle. The vibe is more laid-back than fancy, which makes it a spot to ease into after a day on your feet. Pastas/entrees $20-$49.

6. Topsy Turvy Brewery

727 GENEVA ST. | (262) 812-8323

This brewery, located inside a historic church, has beautiful stained-glass windows and tall ceilings for a bright and social atmosphere. Brewed onsite, Topsy Turvy’s beers put a twist on classic Wisconsin flavors, with fun names like Plastered Pastor Double IPA and Chai of the Tiger wheat beer. Order a flight to try a few, and see if one of the frequent open mic, live music or game nights is happening while you’re in town.
