The USS Milwaukee, the Wisconsin Spirit, electric motorcyclists and safer boxing gloves.

➸ The Navy’s USS Milwaukee, a newly christened littoral combat ship, totally kicks butt, and damaged about 40 boats over Labor Day weekend when its testing maneuvers caused a 5-foot wake to slam into the coast of Door County.

➸ A new women’s tackle football team called the Wisconsin Spirit has begun recruiting in Milwaukee and hopes to take on neighboring teams within the Independent Women’s Football League, which includes the Minnesota Vixen and Madison Blaze.

➸ A local band of electric motorcyclists, led by Ben “300 MPG” Nelson, circumnavigated Lake Michigan in September and blogged about the experience at 300mpg.org, traversing a total of 1,200 miles “without using a single drop of gasoline.”

➸ A booming maker of combat sports equipment, Combat Corner Professional, located in Menomonee Falls, has designed a safer boxing glove that provides special support to the vulnerable metacarpal bones that buttress the palm.
