Things are happening on Bay View’s Kinnickinnic Avenue, south of Bay and north of Ward. Let me paint a picture for you. On the east side of KK, there are the drinking and dining establishments Lost Whale, Room Service and EsterEv, among others. On the right is the KinetiK apartment building, whose ground level is turning into a food destination as well, with Paloma Taco + Tequila, Mochinut, a Vietnamese spring roll restaurant called Roll Up, and now, Ni Burmese.

Opening Saturday, Jan. 25, Ni Burmese (2160 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.) taps into the culinary traditions of Burma (the country now known as Myanmar) in Southeast Asia. Known for stews, soups, salads and curries, the country is influenced by the cuisines of neighboring Thailand and Laos, as well as India and China. The menu is inspired by co-owner Nyo Nyo Lin’s heritage and the recipes passed down through generations of her family. Lin will operate the restaurant with her mother, Ni Ni. Dishes you can expect to find are mohinga (a fish-rice noodle soup), Burmese tempura, samosas, fermented tea leaf salad, coconut chicken soup, spicy and sour steamed fish, fried pork ribs, Burmese curries, and khay oh, a soup made of bean vermicelli with either pork or chicken.
