Summer technically arrived today, but the welcoming party must wait until this Saturday. That’s when the East Side Business Improvement District throws its annual Summer Soulstice street festival on North Avenue. The event, now in its 19th year, features an array of activities, including an opening yoga session at North Point Water Tower Park at 10 a.m., BMX bike stunt performances starting at noon, an all-ages rock wall opening at noon, a dodgeball tournament at 1 p.m., an egg roll eating contest at 4 p.m. and multiple children activity areas.
But even though Summer Soulstice offers a unique blend of entertainment not available at other street festivals, the real draw remains the impressive all-local line-up. It used to be that the yearly bill would feature one burned out rock band as headliner—Von Bondies, Local H—but over the past few years, those spots have been given to Milwaukee-area musicians. This year Brothers By Choice, Space Raft and Foreign Goods headline the three stages. The complete list of stages and performers is available below:

Book discussion and guitar shredding
Steven Hyden, the former editor of the now-defunct AV Club Milwaukee, returns to talk about his new book Your Favorite Band Is Killing Me at Cactus Club on Saturday at 7 p.m. The pop culture tome dissects pop music rivalries like The Beatles vs. The Stones, Biggie vs. Tupac and Kanye West vs. Taylor Swift and what they tell us about our current culture. Milwaukee Record’s Matt Wild (and Hyden’s successor at AV Club Milwaukee) moderates the hour-long discussion, which will be recorded as a live podcast for the website. There is no cover charge.
Afterwards, the direction turns abruptly from books to guitars, as Screaming Females headline a show with openers DUSK, Holy Shit! and New Boyz Club. Doors open at 9 p.m. Tickets are available at the door and here.
Direct Hit!
Pop-punk band Direct Hit! celebrates its debut album, Wasted Minds, on Fat Wreck Chords with a release party at the Metal Grill on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.. A limited number of special release vinyl edition will be available at the show. The bill also includes Midnight Reruns, The Hussy and Jetty Boys. Advance tickets are available here.
