Some looking at the precipitous decline of the news business urge some kind of “journalism bailout” – new policies, for example, that would promote non-profit ownership or otherwise give special breaks to the press. A new report from the University of Southern California and promoted by the activist media-reform group Free Press says that journalism has always gotten a helping hand from government – and that such help has in fact been diminishing in recent years but could and should be restored.
Bad news for pay walls?
Uh oh… Now that Newsday on Long Island is charging for access to much of its content it has gotten exactly… 35 new subscribers. (To be sure, current print subscribers enjoy access, as do customers of Long Island’s primary cable TV company, Newsday ‘s new owner. Still, this doesn’t sound very promising…)
