It's another great week for the live music scene, with upcoming performances from Kris Kristofferson, Blue Öyster Cult and more.

Local Coverage, hosted by Milwaukee Record, is an annual event where Milwaukee bands play abridged sets of other local bands’ material with proceeds going towards area non-profit organizations. The narrowly-focused concept shouldn’t work as well as it does, but the rapid-fire festival provides one of the best shows of the winter and perhaps the whole year. At its core, it’s a celebration of Milwaukee artists and an examination of the innovative, creative minds behind the music scene.

After the successful inaugural event at Club Garibaldi two years ago, Local Coverage moved to the more expansive confines of Turner Hall Ballroom in 2016. While the bigger space presented a tougher challenge to fill the room, the performance was again packed by night’s end. The very inspired sets did not leave fans duped, either. It’s easy to see how Tigernite’s glammy, over-the-top rendition of GGOOLLDD converted people to become fans of both bands. And at the very least, it’s fascinating to see how musicians tackle a genre outside of their normal comfort zones.

On Friday, January 13, Local Coverage returns to Turner Hall Ballroom. The event features D’Amato playing The Pukes, Lorde Fredd33 playing Midwest Death Rattle, Buffalo Gospel playing Midnight Reruns, Marielle Allschwang playing Lorde Fredd33, Midwest Death Rattle playing D’Amato, Abby Jeanne playing Devil Met Contention, Midnight Reruns playing Marielle Allschwang, The Pukes playing Buffalo Gospel, Vincent VanGreat playing Abby Jeanne, Devil Met Contention playing Vincent VanGreat. The $10 cover charge benefits Girls Rock Milwaukee and COA Youth & Family Centers.

Stream of the Week

In advance of next week’s five-day Riverwest FemFest (January 18-22), organizers released the second in a trilogy of compilations that illustrates the broad sonic scope of the festival. The first volume included artists like Fivy, Caley Conway and Fox Face. This edition features contributions from neo-soul singer B-Free, power pop group Rocket Paloma and the experimental ambient soundscapes of Apollo Vermouth, but the exciting takeaway from this compilation (and the festival as a whole) is discovering new voices in the music scene.
