From retro-flair institutions like Leon’s on the South Side to Wholly Cow’s frozen custard in Lake Country, here’s where to secure frozen goodness for carry-out or to-go.

Babe’s Ice Cream

This Bay View scoop shop – offering gluten-free, dairy-free and nut-tree-free options, plus standard dairy flavors – is open for take-out Thursday and Sunday noon to 8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Also on the menu: ice-cream cakes and ice-cream sandwiches, plus a sundae kit (toppings included). The Chocolate Factory

The ice cream shop offers curbside pick-up and DoorDash delivery for seven of its locations. Cedarburg hours: 11 a.m.-8 p.m. (Delivery Coming Soon); Delafield 11 a.m.-7 p.m.; Elm Grove 11 a.m.-7 p.m.; Oconomowoc 11 a.m.-9 p.m.; Pewaukee 11 a.m.-7 p.m. (Walk-Thru Ice Cream Window); Waukesha 11 a.m.-8 p.m.; West Bend 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Curbside pick-up coming to the Oak Creek location on May 11. 

Culver’s

With numerous locations around the Milwaukee area, the Wisconsin-based chain’s drive-thrus remain open for frozen custard (and other menu items) daily 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Divino Gelato Café

This gelato spot offers carry-out of unique flavors (like Cherry Chill CBD Infused Gelato). Open from noon to 6 p.m. (227 W. From a Build-Your-Own-Sundae pack (includes whipped cream and other accoutrements) to off-beat flavors (like Maple & Bacon) by the pint, these two frozen-custard locations are open for curbside delivery once you place an online order here. Gilles Frozen Custard

An institution in Tosa since 1938, this frozen custard stand is open Sunday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Place to-go orders through the online menu here or phone ahead for pick-up. (7515 W. Bluemound Rd., Wauwatosa, 414-453-4875)

The Kiltie Drive-In

This Oconomowoc institution is doing strictly to-go orders (cash or check payment only). And that applies to the whole menu – and it’s a big one. Sandwiches and dinners (chicken, shrimp, fish fry), along with all kinds of frozen custard treats: cones, sundaes, flurries, shakes and malts. Open daily 10 a.m.-9 p.m. (N48 W36154 E. All locations for this frozen-custard stand allow take-out orders only; place your order by calling first, upon arrival or via this online form. Murf’s Frozen Custard

Open Tuesday-Thursday and Saturday-Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. for drive-thru (Waukesha) and take-out (Brookfield) service only. Oscar’s Frozen Custard & Sandwiches

Available for drive-thru and carry-out only, the frozen-custard and burger joint is open Sunday-Thursday 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 10:30 a.m. to midnight. Out & Out Custard & Sandwiches

You’ll pass this shop on Highway 52 on your way into downtown Cedarburg. It offers dinner specials, salads and wraps. along with frozen treats, including shakes and malts, cups and cones, pints and quarts. Order at the walk-up window or call ahead. Purple Door Ice Cream

Perched on a corner in Walker’s Point, this scoop shop with 20 rotating flavors is open for take-out Friday-Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. and Monday-Thursday 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., or online orders for curbside pick-up. Location inside Mequon Public Market is open for online orders or by phone for curbside pick-up only. Owned by two former educators, the “e-learning ice cream packs” are a four-pack of pints with an educationally based ideas sheet for activities with ice cream and dry ice. (205 S. Scratch Ice Cream

Folding in Dairy State, um, dairy ingredients and crafted in small batches, products include scoops (vegan or dairy options) as well as a Quarantine Care Package (six pints and 18 par-baked cookies). Wholly Cow

The streamlined take-out menu at this burger-and-custard spot (owned by the Stoffers since its 1990s opening) features only frozen custard and ice-cream treats.
