An Insider's Guide to Running Your First Marathon

We want you to run your best this weekend at the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon. That’s why we talked to some experts to get you some advice.

Once you’ve decided to take on the challenge of running a marathon, the first thing you need to do is set yourself up for success. Scott Kasten and Lucia Cronin serve as ambassadors for the annual Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon, which takes place Oct. 6 this year. Here are their tips on how to train and make the most of the experience.

Find the right fuel

Lucia Cronin

Test different types of nutrition. … On any given run, test only one variety of nutrition so you can know whether or not that variety works for you.

Practice makes perfect

Scott Kasten

Practice everything about race day. Not only the nutrition, but wear what you’re going to wear: the socks, the shorts, the shoes, the shirt, everything. Never try anything new on the day of the race. It all has to be totally routine.

Don’t stress the competition

Scott Kasten

Just focus on finishing with a smile on your face. You shouldn’t worry about who’s passing you or how fast that person’s running or how fast your friend’s running.

Don’t get discouraged

Lucia Cronin

Remember that it’s the training runs that are the hardest that really make you the strongest. … It’s the things that we struggle through that strengthen us.
