1. Tosa East Towne Porch Concerts
The annual live music event (Sept. 19) is unique in its setting – the front porches and yards of East Tosa homes. Locals walk or bike through the neighborhood to catch free performances.

A lifestyle boutique with an Up North aesthetic, The Flannel Fox offers apparel (well beyond its namesake) for men and women, rustic home décor and gifts sourced from Wisconsin artisans. The store even smells the part – an appealing fresh piney fragrance wafts through the space. 7602 Harwood Ave.

3. Idyll Coffee Roasters
The almost 1-year-old specialty coffee shop and roaster has carved a space for itself within the crowded cafe scene. One of the ways it’s done that is its rehabbed two-level building, which lends itself to working and cozy nesting. As for the coffee, Idyll prioritizes ethically sourced, beans and adds some flair to its specialty drink menu – things like banana bread latte. 6330 W. North Ave.
4. The Well Red Damsel
The brick-and-mortar evolution of a pop-up, this bookstore (Wisconsin’s first dedicated to the romance genre) opened in 2025, and business has continued to boom. Hundreds of customers flock for new releases and author meet-and-greets, with lines often stretching down the block. Say hello to Bert the Bookseller, the shop’s bulldog. 6429 W. North Ave.
5. Lion’s Tail Brewing
This taproom is usually bustling with activity due to its good beers (try the Juice Cloud hazy IPA) and great space. Neenah-based Lion’s Tail hit a home run with its conversion of a former garden store, turning the open-but-roofed outdoor area into one of the metro’s finest three-season patios. 8520 W. North Ave.

6. Ca’Lucchenzo
The intimate Italian restaurant known for homemade pastas is the “closest thing to actually being in Italy,” Koch says. “The food is so good, the flavors so spot-on.” Koch’s favorites include gnoccho fritto – fried dough served with cured meats and cheeses. “It’s a banger,” he says. 6030 W. 7. Menomonee River Parkway
Koch and his wife, Sarah, enjoy strolling along this oasis filled with natural beauty, through Hart Park in The Village, as well as Hoyt and County Grounds parks just to the west. Koch uses it as his main form of exercise. “It’s scenic and serene. As much as I’m a people person, I really just feel better when they’re not around.”
8. Cranky Al’s
Morning crowds form long lines to snap up delicious crullers and Hoytie Toyties at this coffee and doughnut shop, which also features pizza. While the apple fritter is “legendary,” the “huge hit” for the Kochs are the maple long johns with bacon. “But all of their doughnuts are above and beyond,” he says. 6901 W. North Ave.
