12+ Cheap and Romantic Date Ideas in Milwaukee

Love is, of course, priceless, but there’s nothing wrong with being frugal. These local date ideas are fun, romantic and under $40.

Brew City Views

There are several ways to take in the Milwaukee sights, even in the cold. The Mitchell Park Domes ($9 per person, 524 S. Layton Blvd.) make for a great day date, even in the most frigid weather. Rent snowshoes on snowy days from the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center ($10), or rent a Bublr bike (rates start at 25 cents a minute) to ride along Lake Michigan for frozen lake views.

Looking to learn a little something, too? Register for one of Historic Milwaukee’s Friday and Saturday “Skywaukee” tours, an afternoon look at Downtown through its connected skywalk system ($16 per person).

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

Take a Look

Did you know you can borrow a pass for free entry to Discovery World, the County Zoo and more with a Milwaukee Public Library card? Another great low-cost option: Thursday evenings are pay-what-you-wish at the Milwaukee Art Museum (700 N. Art Museum Dr.). Or stargaze with your sweetie for $6 each at one of the city’s most romantic hidden gems: the Manfred Olson Planetarium (1900 E. Kenwood Blvd.).

Try Something New

Looking to shake things up? Break a sweat with a rock-climbing date in the lower level of Turner Hall ($20 per person including gear, 1040 N. Vel R. Phillips Ave.). Or take a spin around Pettit Ice Center ($9 per person plus $5 for skate rentals, 500 S. 84th St.) or Red Arrow Park (free with $11 rentals, 920 N. Water St.), weather permitting. Tap into your inner Sconnie with hammerschlagen at Old German Beer Hall (1009 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr.)

Sound Budget

Live music is a classic date-night option, and shows at these spots are usually free or under $20 per person. X-Ray Arcade (5036 S. Packard Ave., Cudahy) often brings hardcore and metal bands from across the country. Caroline’s (401 S. Second St.) is a great spot for intimate jazz. And Anodyne Coffee (224 W. Bruce St.) stages a mix of touring and local acts with a focus on indie alternative music.

Game On

Nothing says romance like a little competition! Stretch your dollar at arcade bar Up/Down (615 E. Brady St.) during its 10-cent-token Thursdays, or roll up to Landmark Lanes (2220 N. Farwell Ave.) Monday-Thursday for bowling ($5.50 per person per game, $3 shoe rentals). Rather sit on the sidelines? Watch indoor soccer with the Milwaukee Wave – tickets start at $20.
