When a husband and wife approached Bartelt, they had a clear vision in mind to revitalize their Washington County house – mix the old with the new by incorporating curated antique pieces alongside modern amenities. Formerly used as a weekend home, the ranch-style property needed to be reconfigured and updated to meet the needs of the clients and their guests. The couple wanted to work within the original structure as much as possible to maintain the pristine views and property.
The project made perfect sense for Bartelt, which has established a name for itself over the past 40 years as a remodeling and renovation company specializing in timeless designs. “Our client on this project is very talented and creative,” says Heather Scott, Bartelt’s interior designer on the home. “The process was collaborative and resulted in a very unique space.”
One of the unique details was incorporating the client’s historic highboy into the renovated kitchen space to serve as a dry bar. It is a beautiful conversation piece. “It was important to all involved that nothing in the space looked too new and that it all had a thoughtful woven story,” says Scott.

Seamlessly blending that historic piece with the home’s modern elements took great attention to detail. The team at Bartelt values functionality as well as form, while making sure the client’s budget is respected. “We don’t want to build something that doesn’t meet the quality that we stand behind and that we’re proud of. So it’s striking that balance between the right project at the right price and the right quality.”
The home is layered with organic texture – like an arabesque concrete backsplash – and earthy tones. The homeowners’ antique corbels were carefully cut to fit into the hood design, adding a personal touch and sense of history. The sink cabinet is an antique piece that was refurbished and incorporated into the custom cabinetry design. “There are just so many talented hands in every project that we do,” Scott says. “We’re not just talking about the designer on the front end or the subcontractors, but also the level of craftsmanship in the trades. I love going on the jobsite and seeing the carpenters and artisans in action. It’s phenomenal to watch.”
Scott says getting to know the client on a personal level helped the Bartelt team bring the client’s vision to life. “What makes this project special is that there are so many stories to be seen and moments to take in everywhere you look throughout the home,” Scott says. “This project was a joy to be a part of and working with the clients made it even more special.”

Designer Spotlight: Heather Scott

Heather Scott has been in the interior design industry for over 20 years and joined the Bartelt team 11 years ago. She has a degree in interior design and has worked in the residential space for her entire career. At Bartelt, she helps clients go through the design selection process, coordinating the permanent finishes like tile and flooring, and finish details such as lighting.
“I always love asking clients about artwork or about certain furnishings or finishes that they want to highlight or showcase in their new space and make their personality come through,” Scott says. “I think that’s what led me to interior design – making it a reflection of the individual.”
