What to Do on a Milwaukee Snow Day | Milwaukee Magazine

Ask MilMag: What’s the Best Way to Spend a Snow Day in Wisconsin?

In this series, Milwaukee Magazine staffers answer questions about the city, share cherished memories, give unsolicited advice and crack the occasional dumb joke.

1. Get Outside

CHELSEA MAMEROW, ART DIRECTOR

One great part of being a parent is relearning how to experience the world like a kid. In this case, it means that remembering that snow days are a lot more fun when you get out in it. Gear up and build a jolly snow man, blow all of your snow into one big pile for the start of an epic fort and (once the roads are clear) take a few runs down a sledding hill. It’s guaranteed to make your steamy mug of spiked cocoa tase even better.

2. Make Hot Schnocolate

CHRIS DROSNER, EXECUTIVE EDITOR

Find your biggest mug, dump in two packets of Swiss Miss or what have you, fill with hot water but leave room for as much Dr. McGillicuddy’s as you wish. Doubling up on the cocoa mix is key because the booze thins it out too much otherwise. You’re welcome!

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

3. Play Some Pinball

CAROLE NICKSIN, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF AND PUBLISHER

Walk to your nearest neighborhood bar and indulge in an afternoon of beer and pinball.

4. Coffee and Contemplation

ARCHER PARQUETTE, MANAGING EDITOR

I like my coffee the same way I like my clothes – cheap and terrible. When heavy snow falls, I pour up a big, steaming mug of bottom-shelf instant, the kind of brew that makes you wince with every sip. I drink that raw bean water while staring out the window at the falling flakes, and I think, “What is wrong with me? This is terrible,” and then I think, “Shut up, Archer. No one cares what you think,” and then I think, “What would happen if I bought llama? Could I be a llama farmer? I could be a great llama farmer.” And onward my train of beauteous contemplation rolls through the lovely snow day.

5. Get Toasty in the Sauna …. Or Play Video Games

SOPHIE YUFA, JUNIOR DESIGNER

Road conditions allowing (or not, for I am an unstoppable force), I’d go to my nearest Wisconsin Athletic Club and get toasty in their sauna, steam room and/or hot tub. If I’m staying home, I’ll wrap myself up in an impossibly soft sherpa blankie and spend the whole day playing video games or watching my favorite show.

6. Read an Entire Book

BRIANNA SCHUBERT, ASSOCIATE DIGITAL EDITOR

The dream snow day falls on a weekend – now that I have an adult job and “snow day” no longer equates to “no school” – because I get a full day to relax and rest, with nowhere to be. I love spending the day reading a really good book and sipping cocoa or tea. Better yet, the perfect snow day is one where I not only enjoy reading a book, but devour it whole, even if it means I’m staying up way past my bedtime. The last book I consumed this way was The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell, and that was nearly two years ago. Sounds like it’s time for another snow day.
