Last month's semi-finalist list has been narrowed to just one Milwaukee finalist for the prestigious award for Best Chef: Midwest.

And the moment we in food land have all been waiting for… Earlier today the James Beard Foundation released the list of finalists for its 2017 awards.

The category most important to Milwaukee diners is Best Chef: Midwest. Last month, three Milwaukee chefs were named semi-finalists in the category. And today, that list was further whittled. Wisconsin’s own Justin Carlisle (of Ardent and Red Light Ramen) is indeed one of the coveted five Midwest finalists. Incidentally, another of the finalists – Jorge Guzman, executive chef for Surly Brewing Company in Minneapolis – shared cooking duties with Milwaukee chefs Dan Jacobs and Dan Van Rite last night (March 14) at the Surly beer dinner held at Dandan/EsterEv (360 E. Erie St.).

The winners of the Beard awards will be announced on May 1 in a ceremony at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
