We have access to so many cool things being in a smallish-large city. Yoga in the lobby of a stunning art museum is one of them. Yep, that’s right. People are now practicing yoga underneath the white ribs of the Calatrava masterpiece in the Milwaukee Art Museum’s Windhover Hall.

In partnership with omTownYogis, the Milwaukee Art Museum hosted the first event was last fall. “There were 43 people pre-registered and 180 showed up!” said MAM Events Manager Krista Renfrew. That was reason enough to convince the museum to make this a regular event. And, it helped that Renfrew is a dedicated yogi and advocate herself. Now, the second Saturday of each month, you too can have the chance to downward dog at the museum.

Whether you are a serious yogi or a first timer, I’d highly recommend you try it at least once.  I attended the April class and was amazed at the sight of the museum’s entryway neatly lined with yoga mats and people packed in like sardines in a can. There is something so zen-like about the austere décor and the slices of sunlight shooting through the glass ceiling like lasers. The one drawback was that no matter how thick your mat is, some of the poses done on your knees can be a bit painful because of the marble floor. If you’ve ever attended an event at the art museum in heels, you can imagine what I am talking about.

Dean Farrell from Yoga Ward (my favorite studio as of late) will lead the next practice this Saturday May 12 from 8:15–9:30 a.m. Classes are donation based, but organizers suggest a $15 minimum donation, which does include admission to the art museum for the day.

There is still an average of 175 people each month, so arriving early and pre-registering is highly recommended. Doors open 7:45 a.m. and parking is available in the Museum’s underground garage for $5.  To reserve your spot now, click here. For more information, click here.

Proceeds are split between MAM and the OmTown Yogis to foster the growth of Milwaukee’s yoga community. Yoga teachers even donate their time. How very yogic of them.
