Back-to-School Burgers
![]() |
Five years ago, Dave Sobelman might have been surprised to know that in 2011, he’d be the daddy of three restaurants. Besides his flagship Sobelman’s Pub & Grill in the Menomonee Valley, he and spouse Melanie run Sobelman’s Tallgrass Grill on the East Side and the new Sobelmans @ Marquette (1601 W. Wells St., 414-933-1601). The students are back on campus, and I hear there’s been a line to get in the restaurant. The MU burger joint opened, in the former Angelo’s Pizza, last week. When the restaurant was announced some months ago, there was talk of continuing the Angelo’s legacy by serving pizza, as well as burgers. But Sobelman nixed the pizza idea. The menu will be familiar to Sobleman’s fans. You’ll find plenty of burgers – the single (and double) Sobelman, bacon bleu, mushroom and Swiss, California and the “Loser” burger made famous in the Travel Channel’s “Food Wars” battle with AJ Bombers. If you don’t want a burger (and why, I ask, not?), the corner spot also serves sandwiches – fried fish, BLT and chicken (grilled, fried, etcetera), $5.25-$9.25. Next on the agenda at Sobelmans @ Marquette – securing a liquor license. Kitchen hours: Mon-Sat 11 a.m.-11 p.m.; Sun 11 a.m.-10 p.m.
Three Square Meals
The Washington Heights neighborhood is buzzing over the opening of Cafe Perrin (5901 W. Vliet St., 414-431-2880). The latest occupant of the former Suzy’s Cheesecake space is serving breakfast (brunch on Sundays), lunch and dinner. The morning menu features dishes like corned beef hash, a chorizo omelet and smoked salmon eggs Benedict. Locals have been enjoying the waning days of summer on the patio. One thing you’ll notice inside the cafe is a substantial bakery case, carrying pastries that might draw comparisons to the former Broadway Bakery & Cafe in the Third Ward. And Cafe Perrin is indeed a relation of the Broadway operation.
Family Heirlooms
I ate an heirloom tomato salad last week. It was served at a local restaurant (that shall remain nameless at this time), which offered the fruit in a caprese-style salad. (I love heirlooms, but couldn’t they have removed the core?) If you’re an heirloom lover, you might consider checking out Tomatomania at Milaeger’s. This is a free tasting event of some 115 kinds of homegrown heirloom tomatoes. Other free activities include a wine and beer tasting. But bring some cash. You’ll be able to buy wood-fired pizza, Bloody Marys, bottled beer and wines by the glass. Sept. 10, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. (4838 Douglas Ave., Racine). Click here for more details.
