The Boston Business Journal published a list this morning of 126 website domains named on a federal Homeland Security advisory as potentially linked to scams exploiting Monday’s bombings at the Boston Marathon.
Consumer protection authorities far and wide have been warning of fake charities set up to ensnare donations since a pair of small bombs killed three and injured more than 100 near the race’s finish line. The state Department of Justice recommended checking the Better Business Bureau’s charity registry as well as that of the state. Boston.com (completely legitimate) has compiled a 100% scam-free list of ways to help.
Besides con artists, another group of opportunists may be attempting to profit from the attack: A lucrative industry has grown up around buying domain names (e.g. god.com or happyshopper.com) and selling them to the highest bidder – and Internet watchers reported that within a half-hour of the bombing, prospectors had already registered such addresses as bostonbombing.com and bostonbombing.info.
