Breaking bad habits is never easy, especially when it comes to posture and body mechanics. Core Align training has me thinking about routine movements like walking, lifting, running and breathing.
I am now three weeks in to my class at The Lift Pilates & CoreAlign Studio, learning how to use the Core Align machine in hopes that it will enhance my running performance. In case you missed how and why I got here, click here.
Each 55-minute class consists of a series of movements that work the entire body, while using the core to control movements. I’d be lying if I said that it was as easy as it looks. There is so much to think about while conducting each exercise and the slightest little movements make such a big difference. Sure, you can just go through the motions, but to really see and feel the effects; you have to adapt to the nuances of the proper form.
I am finally picking up on the commands like: “Tuck your tailbone,” “Lift your ribcage,” and “Square off your hips!” I seem to have quite a bit of trouble keeping my tailbone tucked. I am not totally grasping everything just yet, but I hope to have some success in the next few weeks before class wraps up. At the very least, I leave each class walking taller, breathing deeper and feeling strong.
For my running, I am up to seven miles, a manageable distance for me. However, when the long runs get up to eight and nine miles – that is the tipping point for me. It’s those miles after the sixth that require you to train your mind, not just your body. You learn to push through the fatigue while maintaining good form and remember that you can always keep going a little bit longer. I would not be able to get out and get my miles in if I wasn’t actually training for a race. The heat has been the biggest deterrent so far, but all you can do is stay hydrated and listen your body.
If by chance, I’ve inspired anyone to get up and get moving, please join me for my long runs or consider checking out Core Align for yourself. The studio has so graciously offered Girl About Town readers a 25 percent discount on a 5-week session. Classes are Monday and Wednesday at either 5:30 p.m. or 6:45 p.m. You can call the studio (414) 751-8200 or email patty@theliftpilates.com to sign up.
And I am always looking for company on my long runs Saturday mornings starting at 8 a.m. at Alterra at the Lake (location has changed). Use the comment feature or email me directly at jlkashou@gmail.com. Only 9 weeks to go!
