This Means War

Best Burger? Remember last May when Camille Ford and her “Food Wars” crew were in town to film the Milwaukee Burger War? Sobelman’s versus AJ Bombers? I know you’ve been waiting with bated breath to learn which restaurant prevailed in that bloody battle of the patties. (The burger-down was filmed at a “neutral location” – Bar Louie, 1114 N. Water St. – on May 8.) This Wednesday (Oct. 13), you will get the news you’ve been waiting for. Hungry and Spooked
I really get into this time of year – giant inflatable pumpkins and crisp leaves the color of the fading sun. And I do appreciate a little of the macabre. Milwaukee Food Tours’ autumn tour event combines food and the spine-tingling scare you might get from watching The Shining. Owner Theresa Nemetz has several dates this month for the three-hour “Ghosts and Spirits” bus tour. It starts in the Third Ward and makes stops at restaurants in the Third and Fifth wards and on Brady Street. Guests will sample food on each stop. Nemetz prefers to keep the exact locations a secret but says that all of them have “reported hauntings.” One of the stops will focus on the famous last meals of Julia Child and other notables. Because alcohol will be served, the tours are open to people 21 and older. Dates that still have openings: Oct. 22, 29 and 30. The cost is $70 per person. Call 800-979-3370 or click here.

Green Autumn
Walnut guacamole potato skins, Caribbean potato cakes, and butternut squash and wild mushroom salad. Sound pretty good? They’re new choices on the fall/winter menu debuting Tuesday (Oct. 12) at Brookfield’s Cafe Manna (3815 N. Brookfield Rd. Brookfield, 262-790-2340). You might still be wearing flip-flops today, but the calendar says it’s time to eat roasted vegetable crustada. Other new options: Middle Eastern stew, sweet and savory wild rice salad, hearty mushroom burger, Thai lime noodles, and a house-made herbed calzone ($5-$17). New desserts include caramel apple fudge, chocolate flourless torte and raw sweet potato pie. The hours at this Certified Green Restaurant: Mon-Sat 11 a.m.-9 p.m.
