The Recession Devil Wears Stilettos

Yesterday I was getting ready for work and I was putting together a really phenomenal outfit (I’m not bragging, but it was seriously great). I opened up my ridiculously huge shoe collection and realized my outfit would be PERFECT if I only had a pair of shoe’s I did not already own: royal blue suede pumps with an almond toe. I made a mad dash to my favorite shoe store, frantically walked in and asked the sales girl: “I NEED a pair of blue suede pumps that are not (holds hands about a foot apart) THIS high. You know, I…

I made a mad dash to my favorite shoe store, frantically walked in and asked the sales girl:

“I NEED a pair of blue suede pumps that are not (holds hands about a foot apart) THIS high. You know, I don’t need to impress Lady Gaga, I’m wearing them all day at the salon.” The sales girl smiles at me and stumbles (in HER Lady Gaga shoes) over to a shelf and starts rooting through stilettos:

“I’ve got the PERFECT thing! They are blue, suede, closed toe AND they have a cute little KITTEN heel.” and hands them over to me….

Since when was this a kitten heel? I mean they’re fine because the goal wasn’t a kitten heel, I bought them…but seriously? As I sat there holding my “kitten” heels, a frigid cold begun creepin’ inside me as the unbearable came to mind: Am I getting old?
No Lynee you are not old, this is just a time you need Google.

Google: Are heels higher now than ever before? Answer: Yes

Why?

You may remember a study being done about lipstick sales soaring during the Great Depression in the 1930’s. Reason being that it was a small purchase that made a woman feel good about herself. Apparently this “higher than high” heel trend is all in retrospect. Consumer reports during our Great Recession proved cheaper but higher heel purchases have gone up astronomically. Why? Escapism. It allows us temporary enjoyment that even if for a moment, blurs the reality of the hardship during these times.

According to Wikipedia, a low heel is anything below 2.5 inches, a mid heel is 2.5-3.5 inches and anything above that is considered a high heel. What is the “average” heel height right now? 6 inches.

Is it good for you to wear these death heels? No, but I’m not here to preach to you about that because I’m the biggest sucker for a great pair. Are my blue suede 4 inch pumps eligible for the “kitten” label? That’s up for you to decide.
