Bottle Sharing is Caring

I was invited to a bottle share at a friend’s last week. It was an event with a charitable twist. Everyone who showed up was required to bring a decent bottle of beer, an appetizer and a toy to donate to kids in need.

The event was a great idea and made better by the quality of beers available. A mix of aficionados and craft beer novices drank brews like Mikkeller Bourbon Barrel Aged Black Hole Stout, Three Floyds Moloko Milk Stout, Dogfish Head World Wide Stout, and Firestone Walker XVII Ale. The most intriguing contribution was a Three Floyds Dreadnaught that had been sitting on a shelf for five years — ancient for an IPA. The beer had a funky almost tart flavor that gave way to a smooth and bitter finish. Surprisingly, the Dreadnaught retained a fair amount of its hop flavor.

You can discover great beers at a bottle share. And, if you add a charity to the mix, sharing is even better.

New Glarus Earns High Praise

Draft Magazine released its list of the Best Beers of 2014. The list had a wide range of styles and breweries from around the United States, but it also included New Glarus. That’s right, the locals earned a mention for Oud Bruin, which Draft called “a masterful example of the age-old Belgian style.” That’s certainly high praise from a magazine that knows its stuff.

Barley Pop of the Week

Another one of the options at the bottle share that I went to was Three Floyds Alpha Klaus. The porter is one of my favorite holiday brews because it is able to blend the coffee and chocolate malts of a porter with a fair amount of hop bitterness. Alpha Klaus is balanced and doesn’t overwhelm your taste buds.

Quick Taps

I’ve linked to it a few times before, but I can’t overstate how well done the Good Beer Hunting website is. Michael Kiser’s creation combines compelling beercentric storytelling with excellent photography. It’s worth frequent visits.
