Sushi Before (and After) Turkey

Are you going to Best Buy’s wee-hours-of-the-night sale? Not only will the retailer open at midnight on Black Friday, in some states it will offer an outdoor movie. Entertainment while you stand in line waiting to buy your 42-inch flat-screen TV. Before retail hell, before green bean casserole topped with fried onion strings, the Shorewood restaurant NaNa Asian Fusion & Sushi Bar will offer its first orders of sushi, Thai curries and Chinese stir-fries. The restaurant, which occupies the former China Palace Restaurant, will have its first day of operation tomorrow (Wednesday, Nov. 23). The majority of the menu will be available on Wednesday, according to co-owner Nick Zheng. He expects the full menu, chef’s specialties included, to be available on Friday, the 25th. (You will not be able to get pad thai on Thanksgiving. Alas, NaNa will be closed.) Expected hours on Wednesday, Friday and thereafter: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. (Fri-Sat closing at 10:30 p.m.) No website, but it is planned. (4511 N. Oakland Ave., 414-967-8888)

The Dark Day
It will take a lot of energy to get through Black Friday. Especially if you have enough leftover turkey to feed a high school wrestling team. Perhaps some time away from the bird is in order. On Black Friday, several local restaurants are doing their darndest to get you out of the house. The Lowlands Group restaurants are offering Black Friday Brunch. Those restaurants are Cafe Hollander (2608 N. Downer Ave. and 7677 N. State St., Wauwatosa), Trocadero Gastrobar (1758 N. Water St.), Cafe Centraal (2306 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.) and Benelux Grand Café (346 N. Broadway). This is your opportunity to fill up on temptations like the Napoleon Dynamite (pancakes topped with bacon, fried eggs, Belgian beer sauce and more). The menus vary at each restaurant. Benelux’ brunch is 8 a.m.-3 p.m.; the other Lowlands restaurants are serving their respective brunch menus 9 a.m.-3 p.m.… In the Third Ward, Stack’d Burger Bar (170 S. First St.) will offer its Hot Breakfast Mess (which involves fries, bacon, eggs and Hollandaise sauce) and Hot Damn Biscuits and Gravy starting at 10 a.m.… And to get you in the mindset of shopping local, the pizzeria VIA Downer (2625 N. Downer Ave.) will offer a 25 percent discount on your food bill if you show a receipt from a purchase made at a Downer Avenue shop between Nov. 18 and 25. VIA is open 10 a.m.-11 p.m.
