With the season change comes the inevitable onset of illness—especially of the common cold variety. According to the Mayo Clinic, there are certain supplements that might help prevent or shorten the duration of the common cold. As someone in need of an immune system boost, I figured alternative healing would be a good place to start. And so I headed off to this week’s “Store Spotlight”: Health Hut.

Founded in 1982 by Kurt Boehm, Health Hut has since expanded its reach to three locations: West Allis, Hales Corners and, most recently, Brookfield. Doubling as both a grocery and vitamin store, Health Hut prides itself on having the “most complete Supplement and Natural Food Stores in all of Southeastern Wisconsin.”

Upon entering the West Allis location, it’s clear you’ve come to the right place if you’re looking for vitamins. The extensive selection is one of the first things you encounter. And because there were so many options, my request for an immune-boosting supplement led to hefty decision-making. The knowledgeable staff discussed similar supplements and how they would suit my particular needs—for both my health and my wallet. No matter what type of supplement you need, the selection is vast enough that you should find the right product in your price range, depending on if you want boutique or generic. My bottle of super vitamins came out to around $10, and that was about mid-range.

To complement the vitamin selection is a well-stocked produce section consisting of certified organic products. Whenever possible, the folks at Health Hut work with local farmers to bring in fresh produce and grains—though the Wisconsin climate does make it difficult to maintain this year-round. Although organic produce can err toward the pricey side, the produce at Health Hut was on par or cheaper than what you’d find at similar stores.

Health Hut also has an active Facebook page where you can check for deals and savings in addition to the store and manufacturer’s coupons found on Health Hut’s website. And don’t forget to ask about becoming a member! Although the membership benefits are being revamped, you can expect to save 20 percent off the retail price of vitamins and supplements.

Aside from its other offerings, the most notable aspect of Health Hut is the welcoming environment. Expect to be greeted upon arrival and pointed in the direction of your needs. And unlike other health chains, Health Hut is unintimidating and even burgeoning naturalists should feel welcome. Regardless of your health needs, Health Hut is a great place to start to find reasonable prices on organic produce and natural products and even better for tracking down hard-to-find supplements at fair prices.
