Cue the pomp and circumstance. Sheriff David Clarke has completed his Master of Arts in Security Studies from the Center for Homeland Defense and Security at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif. According to a press release from the school, the outspoken sheriff was one of 29 students awarded degrees on Friday, after completing coursework and a dissertation.
Clarke was the only elected sheriff in the group, though two of the other graduates listed serve as officers within sheriffs’ departments in California. The Milwaukee cop has tended to avoid questions about his time in California, though he took to talk radio in February to fire at perceived critics. WISN first reported on his studies after Clarke responded to criticism of a radio advertisement (the one advising citizens to arm themselves, given rising police response times) from California.
Appearing on the Charlie Sykes Show, Clarke said he was one of 600 in a group that applied to the MA program, and one of only 31 selected for matriculation.

During the 18-month online and in-residence program, Sheriff Clarke collaborated with homeland security officials from across the nation on current policy, strategy, and organizational design challenges. He wrote a thesis on striking a balance between domestic intelligence operations and protecting privacy and civil liberties.
