Oak and Okkervil

Whitey Morgan  Monday, Sept. 19: Whitey Morgan and the 78’s at Club Garibaldi, 8 p.m. Hailing from the economically hardened poster child of Flint, Mich., Whitey Morgan and the 78’s play a brash brand of old-school honky tonk with a hard-drinking attitude. Like their home city, Whitey and the crew’s music is raw, hard-driving and bitter. (2501 S. Superior St., myspace.com/clubgaribaldis) Tuesday, Sept. 20: Northless with Before the Eyewall and Stock Options at Quarters Rock ‘n’ Roll Palace, 9 p.m. It’s no secret that we have a bit of a thing for Milwaukee’s premier sludge metal outfit Northless.…

Tuesday, Sept. 20:
Northless with Before the Eyewall and Stock Options at Quarters Rock ‘n’ Roll
Palace, 9 p.m.
It’s no secret that we have a bit of a thing for Milwaukee’s
premier sludge metal outfit Northless. Loud, dark and unapologetic, the band
has the unique ability of creating eardrum-destroying music that would send
your mother to an insane asylum, but it’s surprisingly listenable and
rewarding. (900 E. Center St.)

Also: Electric Six
with Kitten and Mark Mallman at Turner Hall, 7 p.m. ($12)

MUSIC NOTES SHOW OF
THE WEEK

Wednesday, Sept. 21:
Okkervil River with Wye Oak at Pabst Theater, 7 p.m. ($18)
Continuing this week’s live music theme of downtrodden anti-heroes
(maybe it’s because of the weather changing), the Pabst welcomes indie rock
virtuosos Okkervil River. Deeply thoughtful, extravagantly imaginative (albeit
rather depressing at times) lyrics balanced out with sincere and creative
musicianship have made these guys the toast of Pabst-toting hipsters and
bearded intellectual hipsters alike. The band’s latest effort I Am Very Far is a beautiful example of
a band at the top of its game and a welcome departure from a recent string of
concept albums. (144 E. Wells St.,

Also: Swans with Sir
Richard Bishop at Turner Hall, 7 p.m. ($20)

(1032 N. Fourth St.,

Thursday, Sept. 22:
Milwaukee Noise Fest at Borg Ward Collective, 7 p.m. ($10-$21)

This three-day festival (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) is
exactly what it sounds like: a collection of loud unheralded bands from around
the country. And though the genre names change slightly by band, rest assured
there are no alt-country acts on this bill that includes names such as Whiskey
Toothpaste, Skin Graft and Three Arguments Against the Singularity. Tickets are
$10 for a day, $21 for all three. Earplugs are extra. (823 W. National Ave.,
theborgward.org)

Also: Gordon
Lightfoot at Pabst Theater, 7 p.m. ($45)

To answer your question: Yes, he will definitely be playing
“The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.” (144 E. Wells St.,
PabstTheater.org)

Also: Marshall Crenshaw
with The Bottle Rockets at Shank Hall, 8 p.m. ($25)

(1434 N. Farwell Ave.,

Also: Cut Copy with
Washed Out at Turner Hall, 8 p.m. ($22.50)

(1032 N. Fourth St.,

Friday, Sept. 23:
Hip-Hop Hates HIV/AIDS Benefit featuring Prophetic, Streetz-n-Young Deuces, Lah
Kid, DJ Bizzon at Cactus Club, 9 p.m. ($5)

The Hip-Hop Hates series, which has already hated on
Multiple Sclerosis and Breast Cancer, turns its angry eye this time to
HIV/AIDS. A stellar lineup of Milwaukee rappers led by the
poised-for-national-success Prophetic will channel its talents once again for a
good cause, with all proceeds benefiting the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin.

with Trapper Schoepp and the Shades and Charlie Parr at Club Garibaldi, 9 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 24: Canyons
Of Static with Wereworm at Circle-A Café, 8 p.m.

(932 E. Chambers St.,

Also: IfIHadAHiFi
with Haymarket Riot and Like Like The The Death at Cactus Club, 9 p.m.

Sunday, Sept. 25: OMD
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark with WASHINGTON at Turner Hall, 7 p.m. ($25)

Although there have been a string of break-ups and make-ups
through the years, this show promises the “classic” lineup that brought the
world such ’80s new wave hits as “If You Leave” and “(Forever) Live and Die.”
Hopefully, they hung onto those keytars. I don’t know if you can still buy
those things. (1032 N. Fourth St.,
