The other night, I paid $20 for a cannoli out of a hand-held cooler.
But now that I think about it, maybe on that particular Friday night, the cannoli really did cost $20 a piece. I think I’m on to something here…
So where did I get this dessert? If you are truly apart of the eastside scene (if I can even call it that) and you are the type of person who can hang out until the lights come on, you’ve heard his chant, “Pepperoni! Cannoli! Pepperoni and Cannoli!” That’s Frank and he is now $16 richer.
I was standing in between the vacant Elliot’s Bistro (2321 N. Murray Ave.) and Paddy’s Pub (2339 N. Murray Ave.) when it happened. My lovely companion and I had just walked out of Paddys en route to Decibel’s dance floor to sneak in some 1 a.m. cardio.
I heard Frank walking/chanting down Murray Ave. and I searched for my stash of cash. I opted for the cannoli and I thought that I would have no problem eating that before we arrived at Decibel (1905 E. North Ave.)
I was so disappointed in my dessert I completely lost my urge to bust a move.
Soggy crust filled with a disappointing ricotta creme and the worst part…there were no maraschino cherries. I know, I know. Who has the guts to give cannoli that type of injustice?
It’s like a scentless rose. It just doesn’t happen but if it somehow did happen, people everywhere would completely freak out. That’s how I felt with my sad and soggy cannoli.
And then there was the running away with my money part.
It was a weird moment in my life, watching an old man scurry away from me like I’m actually going to run after him. In flats, I would have considered that as an option. But, in my own little world, a flat is never a suitable choice for evening.
So there I stood, realizing that I was victimized by a cannoli selling Italian immigrant who is probably somebody’s great-great grandfather. If it weren’t for how cute he looked in his black fedora, I would have taken off my favorite brown leather gladiator pumps to get my change.
Well actually, no. I would never do something that requires me to become barefoot on pavement…voluntarily.
In Frank’s defense, there is a reason he only does this around bar time. Drunken people don’t really know or care about quality. Unfortunately for Frank, he handed over a soggy cannoli to the wrong girl.
One place I can promise you Frank and his faulty cannolis won’t be is downtown; more specifically, Milwaukee Street.
Next Saturday, October 10, Apartment 720 (718 N. Milwaukee St.) will be hosting DJ AM. The club’s Manager and Events Coordinator, Tom Watson, said that they are playing his arrival by ear, most likely due to the DJ’s recent airplane accident in South Carolina.
Watson did point out that if he does cancel, they will rebook AM for a later date this fall. In the future, don’t forget about Apartment 720 when making your weekend plans. Watson is in the final stages of booking Joel Madden, Samantha Ronson and one of the DJ’s from Madonna’s tour.
Keep checking Bar Time to find out the details.
