Fat Is Where It’s At
My thoughts are transporting me to New Orleans, a great city I have visited, only not for Mardi Gras. Maybe I wouldn’t be missing much if I go to Maxie’s Southern Comfort next Monday (Lundi Gras) or Tuesday (Mardi Gras). The menu is all in keeping with the occasion. Alligator pork sausage with fennel, orange and limas; turtle soup; crawfish étouffée; muffuletta sandwiches; duck gumbo; blackened red fish; coconut voodoo shrimp; oyster Bienville and lots more ($3.95-$16.95). Strawberry beignets for dessert! Drink specials, too, specifically $5 passion-fruit Hurricanes. Lordy, doesn’t sound like you’ll be walking straight once the night is over. March 7-8. (6732 W. Fairview Ave., 414-292-3969)

Rock the Chili
Independent radio is hot, hot, hot. That’s why every year for going on 10, WMSE 91.7FM holds its Rockabilly Chili Contest. Really, it’s a fundraiser for the station, as well as an opportunity for 50 competitors to give it their chili all. These names include Cafe LuLu, Beans and Barley, Blue’s Egg, Comet Cafe/Honeypie, Chili Lili’s Chili Bar, Hinterland, Jake’s Deli, Milwaukee Ale House, Maxie’s Southern Comfort, McBob’s and many others. There will be meat and vegetarian chili varieties. Milwaukee Ale House is providing the beer. March 6, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. MSOE Kern Center (1245 N. Broadway) Click here for ticket info.
Unexpectedly, Well, Irish
Starting to think about adding green food coloring to your milk? Nothing like food dyed in the festive spirit of St. Patrick’s Day. Streetza Pizza, Milwaukee’s mobile pizza emporium, will do both a Reuben and corned beef and cabbage pizza ( and no green dye). The best way to find Streetza is to follow it on Twitter: @streetzapizza. You might find the truck on Water Street late in the evening on Fridays and Saturdays. Chili Lili’s (525 E. Menomonee St.), one of the competitors in this weekend’s WMSE Rockabilly Chili Contest, will offer a chili to honor St. Pat. Lili’s McChili, featured corned beef from McBob’s Pub & Grill, will be available starting Wednesday.
