Cosmic Connections
Tune in to the “CBS Morning Show” on Wednesday, Sept. 12 – perhaps after a commercial break or an attempt at anchor humor – and you might find something relevant to your Milwaukee restaurant-loving life. A local food blogger by the name of Joe Laedtke posts his photos and commentary on the EatingMilwaukee.com website. The website caught the eye of London-based CBS News correspondent Willem Marx, who apparently once dated that famous royal, Kate Middleton. Marx told me by e-mail he’d visited Milwaukee “a few years back and enjoyed the place a lot.” To Laedtke’s surprise, the CBS people arranged for a Milwaukee visit – last week – which included stops at Ashley’s Bar-B-Que (1501 W. Center St.), Milwaukee’s Asian Markets (6300 N. 76th St.) and Bay View restaurants Pastiche Bistro, Odd Duck and Café LuLu. Someone who knows firsthand about the CBS visit is Sister Stella DeVenuta, a local food enthusiast and friend of Laedtke. As DeVenuta explains it, when she joined Marx and crew at Asian Markets, she convinced them to visit Bay View. “I was so exuberant about restaurants in Bay View, and they caught my enthusiasm,” says DeVenuta, who shared these details by phone as she dined at the Oak Creek Thai restaurant Lotus. As for the segment, Marx says it’s currently slated to run at 7:30 a.m., Milwaukee time. And you’ll find a review of Odd Duck in the October issue of Milwaukee Magazine, available on newsstands beginning next Monday.
New Home
The new school year signals a time of growth, of new beginnings. That certainly applies to MATC’s Cuisine Restaurant. The one-time fifth-floor restaurant at the Downtown campus recently debuted its sleek new first-floor digs (1015 N. Sixth St.). Check them out in the above photo. The restaurant is open for lunch on most Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. This week’s menu features Jeff-Leen Farm chicken breast with mushroom duxelles, herb couscous and citrus beurre blanc; striped bass with sauce choron; and hanger steak with sauce Robert and smoked Gouda potato puree.
