At this time of the year, my hair needs every conditioning product on the market. My stomach needs only a cream puff. And… spaghetti and meatballs on a stick? Deep-fried butter? Tums? You know where I’m going with this, don’t you? Wisconsin State Fair! The fest that encourages you to let go of any abstemious ways (at least for a day) starts Thursday (August 4) and runs through the 14th. Honoring all things fair, Sanford Restaurant is running its “State Fare” Exploration Menu. Sitting down to this menu may give you a new appreciation for fair food. Chef Justin Aprahamian’s menu features the following – a duck corn dog with foie gras mustard and cherry tomatoes; a pork sandwich (roast pork shoulder, grilled corn bread and spiced corn relish) and a caramel apple (caramelized heirloom apple with salted pecans and vanilla cinnamon ice cream). The four-course menu ($49) runs through Friday, August 19. (1547 N. Jackson St., 414-276-9608)
Shaken and Stirred
Iron Bartender? This Saturday in the Third Ward, while some sway to the sounds of the Bourbon Street Stompers, a lucky troupe of judges will crown the Third Ward’s bartender extraordinaire from the area’s participating bars – Club Charlies, Coquette Cafe, Ryan Braun’s Graffito, Hinterland Erie Street Gastropub, Milwaukee Ale House, Palms and others. That’s at 3 p.m. The occasion? The annual Summer Sizzle Jazz Festival. Come on down for the bartender show and you’ll have plenty of time to eat and drink before checking out Swing Nouveau at the Commission Row stage ( 300 N. Broadway) at 8:30 p.m. August 6, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. For the full music schedule, click here.
