Gastro Plans
Eagan’s (1030 N. Water St.) was all the rage when it opened in 1993. If you were going to a show at Milwaukee Rep or the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, you stopped at Eagan’s before or after. As other restaurants on Water Street changed and competition from other parts of the city grew, Eagan’s wasn’t so much the place to be anymore. And now it’s gone – the tables and chairs grouped inside a darkened restaurant. Bartolotta Restaurant Group – whose dining domain reaches from the lakefront (Harbor House) to Brookfield (Mr. B’s) – is taking on Water Street. Inspired by similar enterprises in New York and Chicago, the group is planning to offer “reasonably priced” food, craft beers and “unique” cocktails at an as-yet-unnamed gastropub. James Beard Award-winning chef Adam Siegel is developing the menu. The ETA for the place is this fall. More details to come soon, I hope.
Bloody News
A pickle, spear of asparagus, green bean, blue cheese-stuffed olive… You know where I’m going with this, right? Bloody Marys are bloody good, the more they’re stuffed with goodies. In last Sunday’s Wall Street Journal, the paper chronicled the “transformation” of the Bloody Mary. Many bars are testifying by putting everything but a PB& J in this blood-red beverage. Joining a list of establishments including The Belmont Café in Los Angeles was none other than Milwaukee’s Trocadero (1758 N. Water St.).
