In a little over one year, Art Milwaukee has made a big splash in this city – especially with the monthly Art Jamboree events that attract 600-1,000 people. Art Milwaukee’s mission is to “enrich, empower and inspire the community through art.” What better way to do this than throw cool parties in beautiful, historic Milwaukee spaces?
Last Friday night, I hit up the event to see what all the hype was about. City Hall’s expansive foyer with cascading balconies was filled with over 900 artists and art-enthusiasts of every age, shape, color and size. There were also media of all kind: dance, music, airbrush, painting, body painting, sculpture and even a draw-bot (think etch-a-sketch on steroids).
One of the highlights of the night was the Cuoto Brothers revealing their new piece “Shark Tales.” I was chatting up Alex, hearing about his trip to Spain, when he wandered off to take a picture in front of the shark painting. Only then did I realize that he was actually one half of the Cuoto Brothers team. He was unassuming, young, enterprising and incredibly talented – much like many of the other artists there. It’s so refreshing that in Milwaukee can you access artists in this way.
Art Milwaukee also acts as a conduit for artist and paid jobs as well as offers family classes and art camps. Visit their website and sign up for the newsletter to hear about their monthly Art Jamborees as well as other offerings and happenings.
I’m Not a Pilot played the after party at the InterContinental, but I was appreciating a different type of art at that point – knee deep in tapas at La Merenda.
