Tuesday, August 14: Sebastian Bach @ The Rave, 7:30 p.m. ($20-$25)
If ’80s cock rock is a genre of music that can best be described as a guilty pleasure, then Skid Row is about as guilty as it gets. Despite being overwhelmingly cheesy and a bit obnoxious, there is no denying that the band could write a catchy tune as evidenced by classics like “18 and Life” and “I Remember You.” And at the heart of it all was the singular voice of Sebastian Bach. Expect plenty of classic hits along with music from his four solo albums. (2401 W. Wisconsin Ave., TheRave.com)
Wednesday, August 15: George Thorogood and The Destroyers @ Potawatomi Bingo Casino’s Northern Lights Theater, 8 p.m. ($30-$45)
When the words “cover song” are uttered, the mind immediately races with visions of middle-aged men channeling their inner BoDeans in dingy corner bars. But some artists have a knack for taking other people’s music and putting their own unique spin on it. Such is the case with the venerable George Thorogood. Outside of his original classic “Bad to the Bone,” Thorogood has made a career out of taking blues classics like “Who Do You Love?” and “Move It On Over” and making them his own. (1721 W. Thursday, August 16: Child Bite (Detroit) with Lamb’s Legs and Fahri @ Cactus Club, 10 p.m.
Since 2005, experimental rock outfit Child Bite has been confounding, and ultimately blowing away, Detroit audiences with a frenzied hodgepodge of musical influences thrown together into a deeply layered hot mess of sound. This blend of styles and instruments, including at times banjo, saxophone and organ, explodes in an intense live setting. Milwaukee alt-rockers Fahri, who are no slouches themselves, add to the impressive bill. (2496 S. Wentworth Ave., CactusClubMilwaukee.com)
Friday, August 17: Brian Jonestown Massacre @ Turner Hall, 7 p.m. ($18)
At a time when many an early ’90s grunge band were slowly transitioned from dirty rock clubs to Billboard Top 40 lists, San Francisco-based The Brian Jonestown Massacre decided to go another direction (well many different directions, actually). This eclectic and constantly changing menagerie of styles on display in the band’s many albums over the years should be no surprise from a band that’s name was derived as a cross between founding member of The Rolling Stones Brian Jones and the most famous mass suicide in history. Though the band is probably most famous for its revolving door of members and well-documented differences with The Dandy Warhols (epitomized in the 2004 documentary Dig!), founding memberAnton Newcombe has continued to crank out dreamy, droning anthems of angst. MUSIC NOTES SHOW OF THE WEEK
Saturday, August 18: Lydia Loveless with Jeremy Thomas @ Club Garibaldi, 9 p.m.
Youth is not necessarily a trait associated with brilliant alt-country songstresses. To truly channel all the deep-seeded pain and inner strength necessary for pulling it off with the likes of Neko Case and Loretta Lynn, most singers need a lifetime of heartache. But 21-year-old Lydia Loveless is staking her claim with a rowdy punk-country attitude and an incredible depth of talent and appreciation for those who have come before her, evidenced by last year’s brilliant Indestructible Machine. (2501 S. Superior St., ClubGaribaldis.com)
Also: Hot Coffin with Night Animals, Sean Raasch and David Leon @ Cactus Club, 10 p.m.
(2496 S. Wentworth Ave., CactusClubMilwaukee.com)
Sunday, August 19: Gojira with Car Bomb and Everything Must Die @ The Rave, 8 p.m. ($17.50)
What do you get when you combine a band named after a way to kill a lot of people (Car Bomb), a band named simply Everything Must Die, and a band who has a song called “The Art Of Dying” (Gojira)? You get metal, baby, metal! (2401 W. Wisconsin Ave., TheRave.com)
Also: Running @ Frank’s Power Plant, 9:30 p.m. ($5)
