We got out of the car and followed a young couple who traveled up the outside stairs and went in through the back door. We entered the Velvet Lounge of Bryant’s (1579 S. Ninth St.). A small bar was immediately to our left with Nick Kosevich and guest bartender Chad Doll serving up the evening’s libations. Bryant’s is usually closed on Monday nights, but Bittercube hosts a mildly secretive speakeasy event from 8-11 p.m. each week.
We stood awkwardly at the tiny bar sans stools until we were directed to take a menu and have a seat. There was one cocktail server taking drink orders, which gave us time to look over the menu. The Classical and Neo-classical drinks were $10 a pop, so we each limited ourselves to one. I chose The Count of Nepal with Rehorst gin, Luxardo Maraschino, Luxardo Bitter and Buddha’s Hand Tincture. My companion went straight for the bourbon with The Celebrated Mr. K. This drink contains a walnut-infused Buffalo Trace bourbon, Benedictine, maple and Angostura bitters. Mine was fruit-forward and well-balanced while his had a bit more bite. Both were delicious, but next time I’ll go for the bourbon.
We arrived early when there were still a few open tables, but as the Web site states, the place completely fills up by 9 p.m. I did a head count, and seating capacity is about 35. Those who came later lingered around the bar until others got up and left. The bartenders were constantly mixing, and every so often they’d pour a flaming liquid, absinthe, I think, between two glasses before garnishing a drink with the activated result.
The music played at an enjoyable volume, the lights were low, and the walls were velvet — I wanted to curl up in them. The large windows frame a vacant street view though the bar looks quiet and closed from outside. Monday nights at Bryant’s offer a truly unique experience. Tell only your closest friends and stay tuned for an interview with bartender Chad Doll next week.
New Year’s Eve
I know a lot of people who could do without the pressure and build up of New Year’s Eve. The way people plan and primp for the holiday is a surefire setup for a let down. Of course, this isn’t true for everyone. I only speak for myself. I’ll be working this special evening, but I plan to see Spoon at the Riverside if time permits. If you don’t have plans yet, here are a few options. I’m sure I didn’t cover all the events, so let me know what else is going on in the comments section.
