3rd Street Market Hall’s New Restaurant Is Opening This Week

Bebe Zito, a Minneapolis-based business, will serve up wacky flavors of ice cream, along with burgers and chicken sandwiches.

Back in June, Dairyland and its sister business Mid-Way Bakery moved out of 3rd Street Market Hall (275 W. Wisconsin Ave.). I haven’t gotten over it.

But life goes on, I guess. At the same time Dairyland’s departure was announced, its replacement was named – an ice cream/burger shop out of Minneapolis called Bebe Zito. And now that business has an opening date: Friday, Aug. 29.

The menu will offer the Bebe Burger, made with a beef and bacon patty; Honey Butter Chicken Sammy; Honey Butter Chicken Tendies; and cheese curds. Ice cream is the other arm in this business.

Owners Ben Spangler and Gabriella Grant opened their first Bebe in the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis. Spangler has the background as a chef; Grant’s skillset is in design and marketing. (She also has a Milwaukee connection, having attended MIAD.) Five years later, they have more locations in the Twin Cities. Milwaukee, the land of frozen custard, will be an interesting test.

Bebe Zito rocks the creative flavor combinations with its ice cream. Two flavors you will see in MKE are Marvelous Mrs. Hazel (a chocolate-hazelnut base with chunks of chocolate cookie dough) and tres leches strawberry snickerdoodle. The Uptown location serves 23 different “classic” flavors and two seasonal. I’m curious to see how many will land here.

Ice cream isn’t the only sweet on the way. Two more dessert/candy shops are coming to the market hall. Drip Chocolate – from the owners of Rod & Makk, also a market vendor – will sell Dubai strawberry cups, dipped cheesecakes, cookie fries (yes, cookie fries) and frappes. The other business is Can-D Shop, described as a “modern twist” on a classic candy story. It will sell chocolates, seasonal sweets and saltwater taffy by the pound.
